The 2024 Talent Development Programme concluded successfully with the completion of the Commencement Day and the exhibition, marking the end of a transformative journey for all involved. This year, twelve talents from secondary schools and three talents from universities were selected to participate in the two-weeks Summer Microbiome Institute (SMI) and four-weeks Microbial Health Ambassadors (MHA) respectively. They have immersed themselves in courses and activities in the realm of biomedical sciences, biotechnology and community outreach.
Amidst a diverse array of learning experiences, talents delved deep into a world of knowledge and skill-building within a condensed timeframe. Through hands-on experiences in state-of-the-art laboratories and animal facilities, coupled with interactions with experts, theoretical biological science knowledge transformed into vivid reality before their eyes. The magical design thinking workshop enlightened talents’ creativity, infusing them with profound inspiration and empowerment, paving the way for their future journey. Notably, the community outreach activities underscored the significance of compassion in connecting one and others. The seeds of compassion planted during the programme are poised to blossom into towering trees, enriching society and benefiting the wider community.
The theme for this year, “Innovate with Compassion,” guided the endeavors of SMI and MHA, culminating in their remarkable learning outcomes showcased at the Commencement Day. SMI revolved around an important issue: as a significant part of the education system, do you think the inclusiveness and support are enough for students with special educational needs (SEN) at school? Advice to teachers. By applying design thinking and engaging in stimulating discussion, talents have formulated innovative and valuable advice to teachers in three key aspects. Meanwhile, MHA created an inspiring promotional video raising the public awareness towards ASD children and their caregivers.
During the event, representatives from SMI and MHA took the stage to unveil their thought processes behind the innovative solutions and to share their feelings and impactful experience. Our esteemed guests, Ms. Ruby YONG, Program Director of The D. H. Chen Foundation and Prof. Sandra CHAN, Professor (Clinical) from the Department of Psychiatry at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, were invited to provide feedback on their learning outcomes. They graciously lauded the outstanding achievements and provided valuable insights and suggestions, which resonated with the audience present.
Subsequent to the presentations, guests and participants engaged in the exhibition area, fostering direct interactions and conversations, reminiscing about programme highlights. The exhibition showcased the transformative moments of the Talent Development Programme where visitors could appreciate their learning outcomes and witness the growth of the talents firsthand. Guests and participants were also encouraged to leave their marks using stamps symbolizing HATCH, creating a tangible record of their involvement in this meaningful journey.
